Yearbook Projects
We have worked with several libraries to complete yearbook projects since our founding in 2001. We recognize in particular the unique character of yearbooks. Unlike other book or serial projects, a complete collection of an institution’s yearbook may be the sole extant complete copy. For this reason alone, IDI treats yearbook collections in exactly the same way it has handled rare book and manuscript collections from such institutions as the University of Minnesota, the University of Florida, the New England Genealogical Society, and others that have entrusted their collections for digitization to our care.
We know that yearbooks are critical resources of information about an institution’s history and, in some instances, a tool to promote the school’s development activities among its alumni. Quality digitization is critical to these photographically rich documents, which following the imaging process may find themselves relocated to the rare book section of the university’s library. To that end, we pay particular attention to the handling of these materials, ensuring as much as possible that they are returned in the same condition in which they arrived. The pilot phase of any project in which we engage, done in addition to samples supplied for our RFPs, minimizes the likelihood of “rework,” reducing in turn the need to handle the books more than is necessary. We also ensure the titles are always properly packed, stored, and shelved before, during, and after the imaging process to reduce as much as possible the chance of alteration to the condition of the works placed in our hands.
